Kitabu cha Baluchi Tanzania

Charles Mustapha Kayoka teaches at the Department of Creative Arts of the College of Humanities, University of Dar-es-Salaam. He has spent the last seven years in making visual documentation and presentation (exhibitions) of various aspects of Tanzania’s historical past. He has  conducted several researches and exhibitions on the history of Islam and Christianity in Tanzania.

The Shiraz and Baluchi are two foreign ethnic groups originating from Iran who migrated to, and settled in, East Africa many centuries ago.  Migrations started in the first millenium with the Shiraz dynasties who established flourishing and renown cultural and trade centres along the Eastern African costs.  Their centuries of settlement and mixing with local people and cultures have resulted into long-term impact as evidenced  through Islamic religion, Kiswahili language, architectures, dress code, cuisine/foods, and having people with Iran-African parentage.

However,  not much is known about these people. But much is not known even about the cultural sites – ruins, that we have inherited. We know that studies have been conducted and texts published, but not much has been disseminated among local communities, not to talk of Iran itself who might be aware of their adventurous past but without much hard evidence about it. This book is a modest attempt challenging scholars to conduct more research on this vast subject of Iranians settlement on the East African coast. Pictures published in this collection were taken from KilwaKisiwani, Pumbuji (KaoleBagamoyo), Rujewa(Mbarali), Bagamoyo town, Mafia, Kitame (Utondwe) in Sadani, Tongoni (Tanga), Unguja, parts of Pemba, Mombasa, Tumbatu, and Pangani where we still have physical evidence of old and current settlements of Baluchi and Shirazi.
